Chapter Twenty-Eight

Beth savored her last sip of coffee, grateful the hot savory hit of caffeine was available in this century. There were times for a good cup of tea, but this morning wasn’t one of them. She eyed Kit seated across the table from her in the main dining room. He was uncharacteristically quiet. None of his witty barbs or roguish innuendos greeted her this morning during breakfast, instead she received grunts and one-word answers. Though he hadn’t come out and said it, she surmised Kit was worried about Sophie. He’d told her last night of the discovery of Sophie’s abandoned room, and the only trail left to follow was the mysterious Lord Renweard. Kit may act selfish, pretending not to care about anyone but himself, yet his actions proved otherwise. She knew he must be upset at the possibility his theft might have caused Sophie harm.

Kit had saved Beth twice, a complete stranger. So, she wasn’t surprised when he set out for York in miserable weather to search for his partner in crime. Not being able to find her was probably eating him alive. She decided to try one more time.

Placing her empty cup down, she cleared her throat. “Getting my money shouldn’t take long. I’ll be back before you know it. Why don’t you wait for me? I can help you track down this Renweard dude. Or come with me and we can start right from the store. Feinstein might have more information.”

He shook his head. Taking the linen napkin from his lap, he placed it on the table. No dramatic flourish this time. “No, for the same reasons I’ve already told you yesterday. Nothing has changed since then.” He glared at her. “Except for the weather. There’s no reason for both of us to be miserable.”

He abruptly stood up from their table and strode across the common room, retreating without another word. Beth scrambled to her feet and gave chase. She caught up to him as he entered their room and prepared to argue.

“But I’ll be already wet and cold from going outside to get my money—”

“Then you can return here, to dry out and warm up.” He grabbed the folded one sheet which passed for a newspaper in this time from the table, and plopped himself into the chair. In short order, the paper was expanded to its full length, and blocked him from her sight as he read.

“What are you doing? You’re just going to sit there reading? What about Sophie?”

She heard his sigh before he lowered the paper to glower over the top of the page at her. “Aren’t you supposed to be on your way?”

“You’re dodging my question.” Beth placed both fisted hands to her hips and glared right back at him. Somebody was a bit grumpy this morning.

“I’m not really used to explaining myself to others, but if it gets you on your way and out of my hair, I will. I’m looking for any possible leads.”

“Oh, yeah, right, that’s good. I would never have thought to search a newspaper.
